Barack and Michelle Obama recently celebrated the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, where a special moment left the former president visibly moved. During a stakeholder event on Tuesday, Michelle revealed that a detail in her outfit carried a powerful message close to her heart.
Michelle, 62, stepped onto the stage wearing a light-brown pencil skirt featuring a portrait of her late mother, Marian Robinson, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 86. The meaningful piece was specially created with the help of Michelle’s longtime stylist, Meredith Koop.
Michelle explained that she had known about the skirt for weeks, but Barack had no idea it existed until moments before her speech.
“I am so proud of my husband. He’s really messed up,” Michelle joked, explaining that the portrait was her favorite image of her mother. “Marian would have been so proud of him and everything he has done for our family.”
As Michelle placed her hand on Barack, he became overwhelmed with emotion and began to cry.
“I am a little shaken up by this because I loved my mother-in-law,” Barack shared.
Marian Robinson, often called America’s “first grandmother” during Obama’s presidency, played an important role in the Obama family’s life. She helped raise Malia and Sasha and remained focused on family rather than the spotlight while living in the White House.
