Anne Hathaway had a simple four-word response after photos of her exposed baby bump sparked online speculation, with some critics questioning whether her pregnancy was even real.
Anne Hathaway is preparing to welcome her third child with husband Adam Shulman, more than six years after the couple welcomed their youngest son, Jack. The pair also share a 10-year-old son, Jonathan.
The 43-year-old actress surprised fans with the pregnancy announcement on June 19, sharing a playful video on social media. Wearing a flowing white dress, the The Devil Wears Prada 2 star initially stood with her arms in front of her stomach before smiling and gently cradling her growing belly.
“x Baby, I’m yours x,” she wrote in the caption.
“We were so shocked”
Since revealing the pregnancy, Hathaway has openly shared her excitement about becoming a mother for the third time.
During a July appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Les Misérables star called the pregnancy “amazing” and admitted that she and Shulman were surprised when they discovered they were expecting.
“Oh, my gosh. It’s amazing. It’s amazing,” she said.
Hathaway joked that they had gone into the possibility of another pregnancy with very modest expectations, eventually referring to their unexpected baby as their “buzzer-beater.”
She later explained that as people get older, the possibility of becoming pregnant can feel much less certain.
“There’s always, you know, hope until there’s not,” Hathaway said, describing their expectations as “very, very low.”
The actress also emphasized how grateful she and her husband were for the unexpected blessing, acknowledging that pregnancy does not happen for everyone who hopes for it.
Critics question her baby bump
The online conversation took an unexpected turn on Aug. 9, when Hathaway attended the Los Angeles world premiere of The End of Oak Street.
The actress wore a blue silk top that was cropped in the front and extended dramatically toward the floor in the back. She paired it with low-rise jeans, leaving her pregnant belly fully visible.
Photos and videos from the event quickly circulated online. But instead of focusing solely on her outfit, some social media users began questioning the appearance of her baby bump.
“I’m sorry but that looks fake,” one commenter wrote.
Another claimed the bump looked “fake as anything,” while others similarly questioned whether it was genuine.
The speculation continued to spread as more images and videos from the premiere appeared online.
Hathaway had four words
Rather than getting drawn into a lengthy argument with critics, Hathaway appeared to answer the speculation in her own playful way.
The following day, she shared a behind-the-scenes video showing preparations for the End of Oak Street premiere and included a short message in the caption that directly addressed the online chatter.
“Fake hair, real bump,” Hathaway wrote.
With just four words, the Oscar-winning actress made it clear that while some elements of her appearance were artificial, her pregnancy was not.
She then shifted the focus back to her new film and the intense heat surrounding the Los Angeles premiere, joking that her outfit was practically “melting” during the event.
After openly discussing her unexpected “buzzer-beater” pregnancy in recent weeks, Hathaway seemingly had little interest in defending herself against every online comment.
Instead, she delivered a short, cheeky response—and moved on.
