Donald Trump and Melania Trump have been married for more than two decades. But according to the president, a simple autocorrect mistake once made it look like he was calling his wife by another woman’s name. During an event honoring military mothers, Trump shared the story and even revealed what had been happening on his phone.
Donald Trump and Melania Trump tied the knot on January 22, 2005, at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Palm Beach, Florida.
Their star-studded wedding included several famous guests, among them Elton John and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also in attendance were Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who would later become Trump’s political rivals.
For Melania, it was her first marriage. For Donald Trump, it was his third. He was previously married to Ivana Trump, who sadly died in 2022. Their marriage lasted from 1977 until 1992. Trump married Marla Maples the following year, but they divorced in 1999. Trump first met Melania in 1998.
Over the past several years, rumors about trouble in Donald and Melania’s marriage have repeatedly circulated online. Their demanding schedules, particularly during their time in the White House, have often kept them apart and sometimes even in different cities.
In January, a source told People that their busy lifestyles had taken a toll on their relationship. Still, the couple reportedly shares an interest in interior design, which gives them something to bond over. Previous reports have also claimed that Donald and Melania make an effort to have dinner together whenever possible.
Donald Trump explains the unusual text messages
Donald and Melania generally keep details about their relationship private. However, during Wednesday’s event honoring military mothers, the president opened up about an amusing texting mishap involving his wife.
Trump explained that his phone would sometimes automatically change Melania’s name to “Melody.”
“I love the name Melody because for a long time, they have spell correct and word correct, and these crazy machines that we use to put out truths… every time I wrote Melania it would correct to Melody,” he said.
Trump explained that because he works and types quickly, he didn’t always notice the change before sending a message.
He recalled writing messages such as, “Melania is fantastic, and happy Mother’s Day, Melania, our great First Lady, Melania,” only to have the phone automatically replace her name with “Melody.”
“And sometimes I wouldn’t proofread it, and I would get just absolutely decimated. These people (the media) would decimate me,” Trump said.
His explanation prompted laughter from those attending the event.
Trump went on to say that people began suggesting he didn’t even know his own wife’s name.
“‘He keeps calling her’ – and I said, ‘What the hell is wrong with this machine?’” Trump recalled.
He said he eventually discovered the autocorrect setting and had the problem fixed.
Social media users have questions
Trump ended the story by saying that Melania had been called “Melody” many times because of the autocorrect issue.
“I had to explain it to you this way. I stood up here to explain it to you. I apologize,” he said.
The story quickly drew reactions online. While some people found the situation funny and relatable, others weren’t convinced that autocorrect was the whole explanation.
One social media user asked:
“He does know autocorrect learns from your typing history, right? So… Who tf is Melody?”
Another person simply asked:
“And so my question is, Who’s Melody?”
Others came to Trump’s defense, with some saying that autocorrect can be frustrating and unpredictable.
One commenter wrote, “Autocorrect is the worst. 100% does NOT learn from me.”
Whether it was simply an annoying phone feature or something more, the unexpected story certainly left social media users with plenty to talk about.
