On March 20, 1991, Clapton’s four-year-old son, Conor, tragically died after falling from the 53rd floor of a Manhattan apartment building in New York City. Conor was staying with his mother, Italian actress Lory Del Santo, when the unimaginable accident occurred. A housekeeper had been cleaning the apartment and had left a window open. In a matter of seconds, Conor ran past the unlatched window and fell.

Lory later recalled the painful moment, saying that she had briefly stepped away after hearing a fax machine. By the time she went to check on her son, it was too late. The tragedy would haunt her for the rest of her life.

At the time, Clapton and Del Santo were no longer together, but he had recently begun building a closer relationship with his son. Just one day before the accident, Clapton took Conor to the circus on Long Island. It was one of the first full days they had spent alone together, and the experience had a profound impact on him.

According to biographer Philip Norman, that special day made Clapton realize how much he had been missing as a father. After returning home, he reportedly told Del Santo that he wanted to become a proper father and be much more involved in Conor’s life. He was even considering bringing both Conor and his mother to London so they could spend more time together as a family.

The following day was supposed to be another memorable one. Clapton had promised his son a trip to the Bronx Zoo, followed by lunch at a nearby Italian restaurant. Conor was excited, and Clapton was looking forward to spending more time with the little boy he loved so deeply.

But that promise would never be fulfilled.

When Clapton received the news of his son’s death, those close to him said he was completely frozen with shock and grief. The loss shattered him. In the days that followed, he brought Conor’s body back to England, where the young boy was laid to rest in Ripley, Surrey, the village where Clapton grew up.

Unable to cope with the overwhelming pain, Clapton withdrew from public life and traveled to Antigua. There, he spent nearly a year in isolation, living quietly in a small cottage. He rarely spoke to anyone and devoted himself almost entirely to playing guitar and writing music. It became his way of surviving the unimaginable grief.

During this period, music served as his therapy. He repeatedly played and rewrote songs, searching for a way to process the loss. Eventually, those emotions gave birth to one of the most moving songs ever written: “Tears in Heaven.” Co-written with Will Jennings, the song became both a tribute to Conor and a deeply personal expression of a father’s grief.

Yet another heartbreaking moment awaited him.

Just days before the accident, Conor had written his very first letter to his father with help from his mother. The young boy carefully wrote the words, “I love you,” and the letter was mailed to Clapton’s home in London.

Tragically, the letter did not arrive until after Conor’s death.

Following the funeral, Clapton was sorting through his mail when he opened the envelope and discovered the note from his son. Lory Del Santo later said it was a moment she would never forget. The simple message from a little boy who adored his father became one of the most emotional reminders of the bond they shared.

More than three decades later, the story of Eric Clapton and Conor continues to touch hearts around the world. It is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be, and how quickly everything can change. Above all, it is the story of a father who was ready to embrace a new chapter with his son, only to have that future stolen away in an instant.
