Completely. I wanted to surprise you for our anniversary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah nodded. \u201cI do interior design now. He came to me because\u2026 he thought maybe this could fix things between us too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked at both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou lied. You said Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derek lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know. I just\u2026 didn\u2019t know how to tell you I was coming here. Not with everything between you two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt anger rising again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo lying was better?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said softly. \u201cBut I wanted to give you something\u2026 something that would make you feel like yourself again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hands trembled as I looked back at the plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sketches of our home\u2014redesigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bigger closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small gym space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in the corner, written in his handwriting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMake her feel like herself again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never stopped seeing you,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI just didn\u2019t know how to help you without hurting you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All those nights I thought he was distant\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All those moments I felt invisible\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in years, she looked just as unsure as I felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI should\u2019ve come to grandma\u2019s funeral,\u201d she said softly. \u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But something inside me shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t what I expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not cheating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just\u2026 silence.
