Then again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The smile on his face slowly disappeared as his eyes moved down the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2026 is this?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I folded my hands on the table, calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose are the conditions I mentioned,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first line was simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMandatory completion of a certified defensive and respectful driving course within 30 days.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His jaw tightened slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cA formal written apology to any colleague or member of the public affected by unprofessional behavior, when applicable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he reached the third one \u2014 and that\u2019s where he froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThree-month probation period with behavioral evaluation, including professionalism outside the workplace, as it reflects company values.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He looked up at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re serious?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompletely,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a long silence in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re judging me for\u2026 one bad moment?\u201d he asked, trying to defend himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tilted my head slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cI\u2019m evaluating how you handle power, pressure, and people when you think no one is watching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That hit harder than anything on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He looked back down at the contract, reading every word more carefully this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was in a hurry,\u201d he muttered. \u201cI didn\u2019t think\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExactly,\u201d I said. \u201cYou didn\u2019t think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, more quietly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou still offered me the job\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cBecause your skills are strong.
