The nursery was ready \u2014 soft blankets, tiny clothes neatly folded, a rocking chair by the window. I had even stopped to buy balloons that read <em>\u201cWelcome Home.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything was perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or at least, I thought it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The moment I stepped into the hospital room, something felt\u2026 off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart skipped as my eyes darted around the room. Then I saw them \u2014 our twins, lying peacefully in their bassinets, sleeping as if nothing in the world was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Emily was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her place, on the small table beside the bed, was a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hands started to shake as I picked it up and opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cGoodbye.<br>Take care of them.<br>Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read it once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time, it made less sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cold wave rushed through my body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2026?\u201d I whispered to myself. \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I rushed out into the hallway, my heart pounding in my ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExcuse me,\u201d I said to the nearest nurse, my voice unsteady. \u201cWhere\u2019s my wife? The pregnancy, the late-night talks, the small arguments \u2014 nothing seemed big enough for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked back at the room. At my babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They needed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I did the only thing I could do \u2014 I signed the discharge papers, picked them up, and carried them out to the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drive home felt like a blur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every red light felt too long. Every second felt heavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I kept glancing in the rearview mirror at the twins, so small, so innocent\u2026 completely unaware that their mother had just vanished from their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I had no idea why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I finally pulled into the driveway, I saw something that made my chest tighten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mom\u2019s car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I walked inside, the babies in their carriers, my mind still spinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She appeared in the hallway almost immediately, smiling brightly, holding a warm casserole dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh! Why not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I swallowed hard, staring straight at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do to Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2026 I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d she said, avoiding my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t lie to me!\u201d I snapped. \u201cShe\u2019s gone. She left a note. She told me to ask you what you did to her!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The color drained from her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She set the casserole down slowly, her hands trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was just trying to protect you\u2026\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProtect me from what?!\u201d I shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom her!\u201d she burst out, her voice shaking. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what kind of woman she really is!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart pounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hesitated, then reached into her purse and pulled out a folded envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to tell you like this,\u201d she said. \u201cBut you deserve to know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hands felt numb as I took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside were printed photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photos of Emily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing with another man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\u2026 this isn\u2019t real,\u201d I said, shaking my head. \u201cThis can\u2019t be real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hired someone,\u201d my mom said quietly. \u201cI had doubts. I needed to be sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou what?!\u201d I snapped. \u201cYou spied on my wife?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was trying to help you!\u201d she cried. \u201cI thought she was cheating! I thought those babies might not even be yours!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words hit me like a punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou told her this?\u201d I asked, my voice barely a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mom looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2026 I confronted her. I showed her everything.
