Not a celebrity. Not even one of her favorite cartoon characters.

Just the quiet, intimidating man who lived next door.

His name was Tank.

At least, that was the name stitched across the back of his leather vest.

We had lived next to him for four years. In all that time, I’d probably heard fewer than ten complete sentences from him. He was a huge man with a thick beard, tattooed arms, and a motorcycle loud enough to rattle our windows when he started it early in the morning.

To most people, he looked frightening.

To Sophie, he was simply Tank.

She had somehow decided that he was lonely.

“Mommy, I think Tank needs a tea party,” she told me one afternoon.

I laughed at first.

“You think Tank wants to come to a tea party?”

She nodded as if the answer were obvious.

“He can have the blue cup.”

That was Sophie. She didn’t judge people by their clothes, tattoos, motorcycles, or the way they looked.

She judged them by whether she thought they were kind.

For her birthday, Sophie made the invitations herself. She carefully colored each one with crayons, added stickers, and wrote the names as best as a six-year-old could.

Eleven invitations went to children from her class.

The twelfth was for Tank.

Before I could stop her, she walked across the yard and slipped the little pink envelope underneath his door.

I expected him to ignore it.

Honestly, I wasn’t even sure he would understand why a little girl had invited him to a children’s tea party.

But Sophie was convinced he’d come.

“He’s going to wear his vest,” she told me.

“Probably,” I said, trying not to laugh.

“And he’s going to drink tea.”

“Definitely.”

“And he’s going to like the cookies.”

She paused.

“Mommy, don’t eat the chocolate ones. Those are his.”

Saturday afternoon finally arrived.

At exactly 2:00 p.m., Sophie put on her pink princess dress, a little plastic crown, and the necklace she insisted was her “fancy jewelry.”

She had arranged a tiny table in the backyard.

There were little teacups.

Little plates.

Cupcakes.

Cookies.

And a stuffed rabbit sitting in one of the chairs because, according to Sophie, “everybody needs a friend.”

At 2:15, nobody had arrived.

At 2:30, still nobody.

By 2:40, Sophie had stopped smiling.

I finally learned what had happened.

Another child from her class was having a pool party that same afternoon, and almost every family had chosen to attend that instead.

My heart broke watching my little girl sit alone at her tiny table.

She wasn’t throwing a tantrum.

She wasn’t angry.

She simply kept looking toward the street.

“Maybe they’re coming late,” she whispered.

I went inside because I didn’t want her to see me crying.

I was standing in the kitchen trying to figure out what I could possibly say to her when I felt something beneath my feet.

A low rumble.

Then another.

The sound grew louder.

I walked toward the window.

And froze.

The entire street was filling with motorcycles.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Then more.

By the time I reached the front door, there had to be fifteen or twenty motorcycles parked along the street.

Men and women in leather vests were climbing off them.

And they weren’t empty-handed.

One carried a giant stuffed bear.

Another had a bunch of pink balloons.

Someone else had a huge gift bag.

And one woman carefully carried a pink-frosted birthday cake like it was the most important thing in the world.

Then I saw Tank.

He walked up the driveway, took off his sunglasses, and stopped in front of Sophie.

For the first time since we’d known him, I saw him smile.

He lowered himself onto one knee so he was at her eye level.

“Word is somebody’s having a tea party,” he said.

Sophie stared at him.

Then at the motorcycles.

Then back at him.

Tank smiled.

“Hope you don’t mind if a few of my friends came along.”

Sophie screamed with excitement.

She jumped out of her chair and ran straight into his arms.

The bikers laughed.

Some clapped.

One of the women wiped away a tear.

Within minutes, the backyard had transformed.

The tough-looking bikers were sitting in tiny plastic chairs.

One enormous man was carefully holding a miniature teacup between two tattooed fingers.

Another was wearing a plastic princess crown Sophie had handed him.

Someone was pouring imaginary tea into a cup and pretending it was the finest drink in the world.

The entire group played along.

But then Tank reached inside his vest.

He pulled out Sophie’s invitation.

Except it wasn’t the crumpled little piece of paper she’d given him.

He had laminated it.

He had protected it.

He had kept it safe.

He looked at Sophie, then at me.

“She gave me this,” he said quietly.

I nodded.

Then his voice became softer.

“Ma’am, there’s something you oughta know.”

He looked down at the stopped.

For several seconds, he couldn’t finish the sentence.

The backyard suddenly became quiet.

Tank swallowed hard.

“Since my daughter was six.”

I felt my chest tighten.

He explained that his little girl had loved tea parties.

She used to make him sit at a tiny table and drink pretend tea from a plastic cup.

He had kept one of her cups all these years.

Then, one day, she was gone.

He didn’t tell us exactly how.

He didn’t have to.

The pain in his face told the story.

“I almost didn’t come,” he admitted. “I figured maybe it wasn’t
