Last Tuesday afternoon, I witnessed something outside Walmart that I still can’t stop thinking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I thought I was watching a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, I’m not so sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was just after lunch at the Walmart on Route 9. The parking lot was busy, but not unusually crowded. People were pushing carts toward their cars, loading groceries, talking on their phones, and going about their normal Tuesday routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was loading bags into the back of my minivan when I noticed an elderly woman sitting alone on a bench beside the cart return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked to be around eighty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had a small purse resting on her lap and a crumpled tissue in one hand. Her shoulders were trembling slightly, and every few seconds she would wipe her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remember thinking that she looked completely defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I saw the biker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He came from the far end of the parking lot, walking quickly toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wore a black leather vest, faded jeans, heavy boots, and had a beard that came nearly halfway down his chest. He looked like the kind of person most people would instinctively give plenty of space to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wasn’t carrying anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He didn’t appear to be in a hurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he walked directly toward the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I watched him approach her wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a moment, I assumed he was going to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe she had dropped something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe he knew her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe he was some kind stranger who had noticed she was struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I couldn’t have been more wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without saying a word, the man reached down, grabbed the handles of her wheelchair and began pushing it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman didn’t scream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t fight him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t even reach for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She simply sat there on the bench, watching him take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My brain couldn’t process what I was seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he pushed the wheelchair across the parking lot toward an old black pickup truck parked several spaces away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s when I shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“HEY! What are you doing?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He didn’t turn around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not even once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He kept walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I pulled out my phone and started dialing 911 while trying to keep my eyes on the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man reached the pickup, lifted the wheelchair into the truck bed as if it weighed almost nothing, and slammed the tailgate shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My kids were sitting in the back seat of my minivan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their faces were pressed against the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They had seen everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remember telling them, “Stay in the car.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I ran toward the elderly woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was crying harder now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I crouched beside her and asked if she was okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My name is Joan,” she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She told me she was seventy-nine years old and had been widowed many years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I told her I’d already called the police and that I’d gotten a photo of the pickup’s license plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s when something strange happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She reached out and grabbed my wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her hand was cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her fingers were thin and trembling, but her grip was surprisingly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Please,” she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought she was asking me to stop the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, she said something I wasn’t expecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Let him go.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ma’am, that man just stole your wheelchair.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Yes, he did. I saw him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked toward the pickup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He’s not taking anything that’s mine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn’t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The truck had already started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The engine rattled loudly as the biker backed out of the parking space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Is that your son?” I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joan slowly shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Your grandson?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Again, she shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’ve never seen that man before in my life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked back toward the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Then why are you letting him leave with your wheelchair?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joan didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, she looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tears rolled down her cheeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she said something that completely changed the way I saw the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Because in forty years,” she whispered, “he’s the first person who…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her voice broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parking lot seemed strangely quiet around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, she looked up at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“…who didn’t look away.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn’t understand what she meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She took a shaky breath and continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For years, people have looked at me and seen an old woman. Someone helpless. Someone who needs to be pushed around, helped, protected.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But that man…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked toward the road where the pickup had disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He looked at me like I was still a person.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I sat there silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joan explained that her wheelchair had been giving her trouble for months. The wheels were damaged, one brake barely worked, and the frame had started to crack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She couldn’t afford a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had been saving whatever little money she could, but between rent, groceries and everything else, there was never enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason she had been crying that afternoon wasn’t because the biker had stolen her wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had been crying because earlier that day, the wheelchair had finally broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had called several places looking for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one had been able to do anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, while she was sitting outside Walmart, trying to figure out how she was going to get home, the biker walked past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noticed the wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He asked her what was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And according to Joan, he simply said, “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he took the wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s when I realized something I hadn’t known when I started dialing 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wasn’t stealing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was taking it to get repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked at Joan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Why didn’t you tell me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She gave me a small, tired smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Because nobody ever waits long enough to hear the whole story.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I felt terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few minutes later, the police arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I explained everything I had seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I showed them the photo of the license plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joan explained the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officers eventually located the pickup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biker’s name was Michael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wasn’t a thief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was a stranger who had noticed an elderly woman struggling and decided to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there was one more detail Joan hadn’t told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Michael had apparently spent years repairing motorcycles and other equipment. He knew how to fix wheelchairs, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had taken Joan’s wheelchair to a local repair shop he trusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And he paid for the repairs himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two days later, I received a phone call from Joan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wanted me to know that her wheelchair was back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Better than it had been in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The brakes worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The wheels had been replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The frame had been reinforced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And Michael had refused to take a single dollar from her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joan told me something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said Michael had left a note attached to the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It simply said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Everybody deserves a little help sometimes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I still think about that afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think about how quickly I judged someone based on how he looked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A huge biker with a leather vest, a long beard and an old pickup truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a distance, the story looked obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A vulnerable elderly woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A frightening stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A stolen wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But sometimes, what we see isn’t the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And sometimes the person who looks like the villain is actually the only person who stopped long enough to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I’m glad I called 911 when I thought someone was being hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I’m even more glad I stayed long enough to hear Joan’s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because that day, I learned something I’ll probably never forget:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don’t be too quick to decide who the bad guy is.
