On Monday, August 31, however, a jury took less than three hours to reach a verdict, finding 63-year-old Davis guilty, according to the AP.

According to reports, a major part of the prosecution’s case revolved around a crucial piece of evidence Davis himself had produced: his self-published memoir, Compton Street Legend.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo said that without the 228-page book, Davis may never have faced prosecution.

Prosecutors used statements Davis made in the memoir to support their argument that he had orchestrated the fatal attack on September 13, 1996.

Under Nevada law, someone who aids or abets a murder can be convicted in the same manner as the person who directly commits the killing. Davis was not the person who fired the shots that killed Tupac, but prosecutors argued that his memoir amounted to a detailed admission of his involvement.

In Compton Street Legend, which was published in 2019, Davis described the night Tupac was killed. He acknowledged that he was riding in a white Cadillac with three other men and admitted to handing a gun into the backseat.

It has long been believed that Tupac’s shooting was carried out as retaliation after Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, was assaulted at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas earlier that night following a Mike Tyson fight.

Prosecutors argued that Davis ordered the subsequent attack on Tupac. Because Davis is the only surviving member of the group that was inside the white Cadillac that night, his own account of the events became particularly significant to the prosecution’s case.

Defense attorney Michael Sanft urged jurors to view the memoir as fiction. He argued that Davis had previously told a Las Vegas television reporter that he was not the person who actually wrote the book.

Despite the defense’s arguments, the jury ultimately convicted Davis of first-degree murder.

Judge Carlie Kierny confirmed that Davis, who faces the possibility of a life sentence, will have the opportunity to appeal his conviction following his formal sentencing, which is scheduled for October 13.

LAD VEGAS, NV – JUNE 25: Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the 1996 slaying of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, talks to his attorney Carl Arnold during a hearing on June 25, 2024 at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
