She had released 19 studio albums and earned numerous awards, while steadily becoming one of the biggest female stars in country music. Fans admired her unmistakable voice, larger-than-life personality, sense of humor, and genuine kindness.

That same confidence and charm were clearly visible during her conversation with Walters.

During the interview, Walters asked Dolly several unusually direct questions about her appearance. Rather than becoming defensive, Dolly remained calm and turned the conversation into an opportunity to explain exactly why she presented herself the way she did.

“You don’t have to look like this. You’re very beautiful. You don’t have to wear the blonde wigs, you don’t have to wear the extreme clothes, right?” Walters asked as Dolly sat wearing her signature blonde wig and a brightly colored outfit.

Dolly simply explained that her appearance was a deliberate choice.

“It’s certainly a choice,” Parton replied. “I don’t like to be like everybody else. I’ve often made the statement that I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable. That’s the easiest thing in the world to do.”

Dolly went on to explain that she wanted an appearance that would immediately capture people’s attention. Once people looked beyond the wigs, makeup, and colorful clothing, she believed they would discover that there was much more to her than her appearance.

“Once they got past the shock of the ridiculous way I looked, then they would see there’s parts of me to be appreciated. I’m very real where it counts…and that’s inside,” Dolly said.

She also joked about the entertainment business, adding, “Show business is a money-making joke and I just always like telling jokes.”

Walters then asked an even more personal question: “Do you ever feel like you’re a joke, that people make fun of you?”

Dolly’s response once again showed just how confident and self-assured she was.

“I know they make fun of me. But, actually all these years people have thought the joke was on me, but it’s actually been on the public. I know exactly what I’m doing, and I can change it at any time. I make more jokes about myself than anybody,” Dolly explained.

She continued by making it clear that other people’s opinions did not define her.

“I am sure of myself as a person. I am sure of my talent. I’m sure of my love for life….And I’m very content. I like the kind of person that I am. So I can afford to piddle around and do-diddle around with make-up and clothes and stuff. Because I am secure with myself.”

That moment perfectly captured something that has made Dolly Parton such a beloved figure for generations: she knows exactly who she is, never takes herself too seriously, and has always been comfortable being different.

Even decades later, her response remains a powerful reminder that confidence comes from knowing your own worth—not from trying to fit someone else’s idea of what you should look like.

There are countless reasons to admire Dolly Parton, and one of them was on full display during a memorable 1977 interview with legendary television journalist […] CONTINUE READING >>>

[1

post-3541","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-home
["GET
