Although the specific type of cancer she had was not disclosed, a doctor is reminding people about several potential warning signs that should not be ignored.

Parton died Tuesday at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by family and loved ones. Her representatives have not publicly revealed the type of cancer she was battling.

Her death comes as medical professionals continue to emphasize the importance of recognizing possible signs of cancer early. Some symptoms can be subtle and may easily be mistaken for everyday health issues.

Dr. Jiri Kubes, a radiation oncologist and medical director at Proton Therapy Center, explained that one common misconception is that cancer always produces obvious or severe symptoms from the beginning.

Cancer Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss and a cough that refuses to go away can sometimes be overlooked or blamed on other conditions. However, having any one of these symptoms does not automatically mean a person has cancer.

“One symptom on its own rarely points to cancer,” Dr. Kubes said, according to OK!. He stressed that persistence is what matters most.

If a symptom continues for several weeks, repeatedly comes back or simply feels unusual for you, it is worth speaking with a medical professional rather than assuming it will disappear on its own.

Persistent Fatigue

Everyone feels tired from time to time. But exhaustion that continues even after getting adequate rest may deserve attention.

“Cancer-related fatigue is often described as an overwhelming exhaustion that doesn’t improve with sleep,” Dr. Kubes explained.

There are many possible causes of ongoing fatigue, including anemia, thyroid problems, infections and poor sleep. Still, persistent exhaustion that does not improve should be discussed with a doctor.

A Lingering Cough

A cough is another symptom that can be easy to dismiss. Most ordinary coughs eventually clear up, but one that continues for several weeks, becomes worse or noticeably changes may need to be evaluated.

“A persistent cough doesn’t automatically mean cancer,” Dr. Kubes noted, pointing out that there are many more common explanations.

However, if a cough lasts longer than expected or seems different from your usual symptoms, getting it checked can help determine the cause.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Unexpected weight loss can also be something worth discussing with a doctor, particularly when there has been no intentional change in diet or exercise.

“If you’re losing weight despite eating normally and haven’t intentionally changed your lifestyle, it’s important to understand why,” Dr. Kubes said.

In many cases, there may be a non-cancerous explanation. Even so, unexplained changes in weight should not simply be ignored.

Cancer Doesn’t Always Begin With Dramatic Symptoms

Doctors emphasize that many potential cancer symptoms can also be caused by conditions that have nothing to do with cancer.

“One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting for symptoms to become severe before seeking help,” Dr. Kubes said.

Cancer does not always announce itself with dramatic warning signs. Some early symptoms can be vague, mild or easily attributed to more common health problems.

The key, he explained, is not to become alarmed by every cough, ache or period of tiredness, but to pay attention when something persists, repeatedly returns or feels abnormal for you.

In many cases, these symptoms will have a harmless explanation. But when something more serious is responsible, seeking medical attention sooner can provide a better opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment.

Dolly Parton’s death has once again drawn attention to the fact that serious illnesses do not always begin with obvious symptoms. While the signs discussed above can have many different causes, unusual or persistent changes are worth discussing with a qualified health care professional.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice.
