Not because he hated me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because he was furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYOU DON\u2019T GET TO RUN TO HIM NOW LIKE YOU\u2019RE SOME HERO!\u201d he roared, his voice shaking the entire parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father flinched at the yelling, pulling his thin jacket tighter around himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tasted blood in my mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been looking for him for months!\u201d I shouted back. \u201cI thought he was dead!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biker stepped closer, towering over me. Up close, I could see tears in his eyes beneath all the tattoos and gray beard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDead?\u201d he snapped. \u201cYou know what almost killed him? Shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake pointed at my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you know where I found him three nights ago?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I shook my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn a dumpster behind a Chinese restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words hit me harder than the punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe wasn\u2019t digging for cans,\u201d Jake continued. \u201cHe was eating leftovers somebody threw away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My knees nearly buckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father lowered his head like a child caught doing something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t hungry,\u201d he whispered weakly. \u201cI just\u2026 didn\u2019t want to waste food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That broke me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because growing up, Dad had survived poverty so brutal he once told me he used to eat tree bark during the war in Korea. He worked thirty-eight years at a steel plant after immigrating to America so I could go to college. He skipped meals so I could have new school shoes. He never once let me see him cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now he was eating from dumpsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake stared at me with disgust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know what he said when I offered to buy him dinner?\u201d the biker asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe said, \u2018Please don\u2019t tell my son you saw me like this. He already has enough problems.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I covered my face with my hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even homeless.<br>Even starving.<br>Even abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was still trying to protect me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake\u2019s voice softened slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m part of a veterans motorcycle club,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were doing outreach downtown handing out blankets. Your dad was sleeping behind an abandoned laundromat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked at my father again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His hands were trembling violently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dementia had gotten worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes he looked directly at me with recognition. Sometimes his eyes drifted away like he was searching through fog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake crouched beside him carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell him what you told me, Mr. Chen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dad looked confused for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then quietly said, \u201cI tried to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe nursing home\u2026 I didn\u2019t understand why you left me there.\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cSo I walked home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel parking lot disappeared around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou walked home?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake nodded grimly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe walked nearly twenty miles before getting lost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father rubbed his hands together nervously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI forgot the street,\u201d he murmured. \u201cEverything looked different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sank onto the curb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biker sat beside me after a long silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe carried this the whole time,\u201d Jake said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From his vest pocket, he pulled out a worn photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me at eight years old sitting on my father\u2019s shoulders at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The edges were destroyed from weather and folding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe showed this picture to people every day,\u201d Jake said. \u201c\u2018Have you seen my son?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I started sobbing so hard I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father looked startled by my crying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, slowly, he reached over and patted my shoulder the same way he used to when I was little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d he whispered automatically. \u201cDad\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence shattered whatever was left inside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because after everything\u2026<br>after I failed him\u2026<br>after months alone on the streets\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He still believed his job was protecting me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake looked away to give us privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after a minute he quietly said, \u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wiped my face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biker hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe nursing home you put him in?\u201d he asked. \u201cWe\u2019ve had complaints about that place before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cold chill ran through me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat kind of complaints?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeglect. Residents left unattended. Staff screaming at dementia patients. Some veterans said their belongings disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked at my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, I noticed how terrified he seemed whenever someone moved too fast near him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake continued carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour dad told us one worker kept calling him useless. Said he smelled. Said families dump old people there to die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I felt physically sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dad suddenly spoke in a tiny voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tried to be good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I broke completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I dropped to my knees in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, Dad\u2026 no\u2026 I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stared at me in confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then asked the question that will haunt me for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan I come home now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I grabbed his hands instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d I choked out. \u201cYes, Dad. You\u2019re coming home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake finally smiled for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before we left, he pulled me aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need you to understand something,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat man worships you,\u201d Jake said. \u201cEvery single day on the streets, he defended you. Whenever someone asked why his family wasn\u2019t around, he blamed himself. Never you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I couldn\u2019t even speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake looked back at my father sitting alone on the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome people think strength looks like tattoos and motorcycles,\u201d he said. \u201cBut your old man? That\u2019s the strongest guy I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the biker reached into his saddlebag and handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMoney from the club,\u201d he said casually. \u201cWe all pitched in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost four thousand dollars in cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can\u2019t take this\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes you can,\u201d Jake interrupted. \u201cTake care of your father.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked at him in shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy would strangers do this for him?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jake smiled sadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause no veteran should ever eat from a dumpster in the country he fought for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before climbing onto his motorcycle, he turned back one final time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf your father ever ends up alone on the streets again\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes hardened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ll answer to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he rode away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father watched the motorcycle disappear like a child watching fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the first time in six months\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He smiled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>The biker\u2019s fist hit me so hard I stumbled backward into the side of my car.
