My backpack fell and everything came out. They laughed. Then the motorcycle man saw.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe didn\u2019t yell,\u201d Caleb said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t touch anybody. He just started his motorcycle really loud and looked at them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey ran away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sat frozen, listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe next day,\u201d Caleb continued, \u201che was there again. He asked if I was okay. I said yes. Kids like that usually stay quiet too long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My voice trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gave a small nod, like he didn\u2019t think he had done anything special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t do much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he reached into the pocket of his vest and pulled out a small patch. It was shaped like a shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was going to give this to him today,\u201d Jack said. \u201cOnly if that\u2019s okay with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked down at it and smiled softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt says Brave Buddy. My riding group gives them to kids who\u2019ve been through something hard and kept going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I started crying right there on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Caleb saw us together, he stopped walking. His eyes went wide, like he was afraid he was in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I waved him over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He came slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack knelt down beside his motorcycle and held out the patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThought you earned this, little man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb looked at the patch, then at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan I?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He took it with both hands, like it was treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From that day on, things changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I spoke to the school. The bullying was finally addressed. Caleb started smiling more. He started sleeping better.
