During a recent stop on his Cody Johnson Live ’26 tour, the song carried an especially meaningful message when a member of the Armed Forces watched the performance live through his wife’s phone.
Johnson noticed the moment and took a special opportunity to honor the real-life “travelin’ soldier” during his performance.

On Aug. 22, Cody Johnson took the stage at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee.
During the show, he performed his popular rendition of “Travelin’ Soldier,” a song that has become a regular part of his concerts since he first shared a video of himself performing it on acoustic guitar in 2022.
That video has since surpassed 70 million views, eventually inspiring Johnson to officially record the song in 2025.
“Travelin’ Soldier” was originally written and recorded by country artist Bruce Robison in 1996. The Dixie Chicks later brought the song widespread attention in 2001 and 2002, during the early years of the War on Terror following the September 11 attacks.
The song tells a touching story through vivid yet understated lyrics, which has helped it remain meaningful to country music fans for decades.
At Johnson’s Knoxville concert on Aug. 22, the song became even more personal for one woman in the audience. Her husband, a member of the Armed Forces, was unable to attend the concert in person.
But thanks to his wife’s phone, he was still able to experience the performance live from the front row.
As Johnson sang “Travelin’ Soldier,” he noticed the phone being held up so the servicemember could watch from wherever he was stationed.
Video captured the touching interaction as Johnson walked toward the woman holding the phone. He then removed his cowboy hat as a sign of respect before continuing with the song.
“Thank you,” Johnson could be seen saying to the servicemember watching on the phone.
The emotional moment also caught the attention of Johnson’s pedal steel guitarist, Harrison Yount. In response to the video shared on TikTok, Yount explained that it was the first time he had seen a member of the Armed Forces watching one of their concerts live through a phone.
“Definitely a cool and memorable moment,” Yount wrote. “We were talking about it after the show.”
The woman who uploaded the video later explained that she had spoken with the soldier’s wife and learned why he wasn’t able to attend.
“He was supposed to be there, but his date kept getting pushed back,” she recalled.
What began as a simple moment during the concert turned into a heartfelt tribute. Johnson’s gesture showed his appreciation and respect for the men and women serving in the Armed Forces.
For the couple, and everyone who witnessed the moment, “Travelin’ Soldier” became much more than just another song in the setlist that night.
