Country music legend Dolly Parton once offered a heartfelt glimpse into her marriage to Carl Dean and revealed what she believed helped their relationship last for nearly six decades.
The iconic singer appeared on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast in early 2024 for an episode titled Dolly Parton: Queen of Everything. During the conversation, the two discussed a wide range of subjects, including Dolly’s early career, celebrity crushes, love, loss, and grief. Bunnie described the opportunity to interview the legendary country star as “a dream come true.”
Dolly grew up in humble circumstances and moved to Nashville the day after graduating from high school to pursue her dreams of becoming a musician. At the time, the young singer jokingly recalled leaving two boyfriends back home as she set out to build a career in Music City.
When she arrived in Nashville at just 18 years old, Dolly said she had no plans to get into another relationship.
“The last thing I want is a boyfriend,” she remembered telling herself. She wanted to “get her feet on the ground and get things going” without allowing a relationship to distract her from her ambitions.
But fate had other plans.
On her very first day in Nashville, Dolly met the man who would eventually become her husband at a laundromat. Carl Dean, who was three years older than Dolly, was working in asphalt paving at the time.
The couple married on May 30, 1966, and remained together for almost 60 years. During her conversation with Bunnie, Dolly opened up about what she believed helped make their marriage last.
“He’s a good guy – He’s quiet, and I’m loud,” Dolly explained. She then pointed to one of the most important ingredients in their relationship: having fun together.
“One of the things that’s made it last so long through the years – we love each other, we respect each other, but we have a lot of fun.”
Dolly also explained that whenever tension began building between them, they knew how to break the mood rather than allowing disagreements to escalate.
She recalled, “We never fought back and forth. And I’m glad we never did.”
For Dolly, laughter and mutual respect appeared to be just as important as love when it came to maintaining a strong relationship.
During the podcast, Bunnie also asked Dolly about what she considered the most important, yet sometimes overlooked, part of her relationship with Carl.
Dolly described Carl as a “homebody” and said that his personality complemented hers.
“That worked well for us,” she explained.
Although Carl enjoyed music, he had no interest in becoming part of the entertainment industry himself. Dolly said he made that clear to her from the beginning.
“He loves music, but he’s not the least bit interested in being in it. And he told me that right up front.”
Dolly remembered one of the first times she asked Carl to accompany her to a major industry event. In 1967, she won her first award, the BMI Song of the Year, and she “begged” her new husband to go with her.
Carl agreed, but Dolly could tell that he was uncomfortable being surrounded by the music business and attention.
After that experience, the couple reached an understanding. Carl would always support Dolly and her career, but he preferred to remain out of the spotlight.
Dolly respected that decision.
“I respected that,” she said. “He’s just special to me, and I love him like he is.”
Their relationship became one of country music’s most enduring love stories, despite Carl largely choosing to stay away from the public eye.
Carl Dean passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 82. Dolly Parton died 17 months later, on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80.
