Parton immediately loved the name and realized it could become the title of a song.
The story behind the song itself, however, came from a very different situation. Parton explained that a bank teller had developed a crush on her husband, Carl Dean.
According to Dolly, Carl enjoyed the attention he received at the bank, and the situation became something of a running joke between the married couple.
The result was “Jolene,” one of Parton’s most recognizable songs and one of the defining country recordings of the 20th century.
