Young Hollywood stars often appear to have everything—fame, money, success, and good looks. From the outside, their lives can seem almost perfect. So when a young star chooses to step away from it all, it can come as a surprise.

That is exactly what happened with a beloved young actor who was admired by millions of women around the world. After finding fame at a young age, he eventually realized there was more to life than Hollywood and the silver screen.
Kirk Cameron became a household name as a child actor on Growing Pains, where he played Mike Seaver. The role turned him into one of the most recognizable teen stars of the 1980s, and he frequently appeared on the covers of teen magazines. But behind the fame and attention, Cameron was struggling with what it meant to grow up in Hollywood—and he wasn’t sure it was the life he wanted.
Cameron never originally planned to become an actor. His dream was to become a doctor, specifically a surgeon. His career took an unexpected turn after his mother was encouraged by a friend to introduce him to acting.
His sister, Candace Cameron Bure, also became a successful actress after starting as a child. She is best known for playing D.J. Tanner on Full House.
The friend who encouraged Cameron’s mother was actually the mother of fellow child actor Adam Rich, who was famous for his role on Eight Is Enough. She suggested that Cameron’s mother take him to talent agents and see if he could get some commercial work.
His mother was initially reluctant, but the decision quickly paid off. Cameron began landing small jobs, including a commercial for McDonald’s. Even though he wasn’t particularly interested in acting, the offers kept coming.
“I was always annoyed having to brush my hair and tuck my shirt in to go drive an hour in traffic to audition,” he later recalled about his early experiences in the industry.
Then came his breakthrough role as Mike Seaver on Growing Pains, and his career took off.
Yet despite his growing success, Cameron was beginning to question whether Hollywood was where he truly belonged. Around that same time, another important part of his life began to change: his faith.
Cameron grew up in a family that was not religious. As he later explained, “When I was growing up, we didn’t go to church.”
He has also said that at around 16 or 17 years old, he would have considered himself an atheist. He believed his views had been influenced by teachers who presented religion as little more than a fairy tale.
Then, a chance encounter gave him a reason to reconsider his beliefs.

Cameron met a girl he liked, and she invited him to attend church with her and her family. He later admitted that his initial motivation wasn’t exactly spiritual.
“I’ll be honest. It wasn’t because I was interested in God. I was interested in the girl,” he recalled.
But the experience ended up changing his life.
At just 17, Cameron’s growing faith began influencing the way he approached his role on Growing Pains. The changes did not go unnoticed by his co-stars and producers. Some people involved with the show became concerned that his newfound religious devotion might affect his behavior and, ultimately, the future of the series.
He later recalled concerns that he might be getting involved in something that would take him “into Looney Town.”
Cameron said he was simply trying to live according to his beliefs and take what he considered the moral high road. However, his changing priorities were misunderstood by some of the people around him.
Over time, his feelings toward Hollywood also began to change. Cameron later criticized what he described as the darker side of the entertainment industry, saying that “the evil, the darkness, the twisted sickness of Hollywood has been going on for a long time.”
His former dialogue coach on Growing Pains, Brian Peck, was later identified as a perpetrator in abuse involving young actors and was featured in documentaries examining abuse in Hollywood. Those revelations further reinforced Cameron’s negative feelings about the industry.
For Cameron, Hollywood increasingly represented power, pride, and ego—values that he no longer wanted at the center of his life.
His faith became increasingly important to him. He believed that keeping God at the center of his life was the right path for him.
At just 20 years old, Cameron married his Growing Pains co-star Chelsea Noble. By then, he had already begun distancing himself from the Hollywood lifestyle, and the couple focused on building a family together.
Today, Cameron and Noble have six children, four of whom are adopted. Adoption is especially meaningful to the family because Noble herself was adopted. The couple have made an effort to ensure their adopted children understand their backgrounds and, when appropriate, have opportunities to reconnect with their biological families.
In 2021, Cameron announced that he was ready to leave not only Hollywood but California as well.
Born and raised in Southern California, he asked his social media followers where they would recommend a Californian relocate. Tennessee, Florida, and Texas were among the most common suggestions.
Cameron said he felt California had become increasingly unsafe and that he wanted to live somewhere that reflected what he described as more “wholesome values.”
The family ultimately moved to Tennessee, where three of his children were also living. The move allowed them to spend more time together while enjoying what Cameron described as a slower pace of life.

He also praised Tennessee for its “healthy freedom mindset” and said he viewed the state as a hub for Christian projects.
The move brought him even closer to his family, something that became especially meaningful when Cameron became a grandfather in the summer of 2024.
He proudly shared the arrival of his granddaughter, Maya Jeanne Noble Bower, on social media.
“Our hearts are filled to overflowing,” he wrote. “Our beautiful baby girl just had a beautiful baby girl, and we can hardly wait to spend every minute with her and shower her with love.”
Although Cameron stepped away from the Hollywood lifestyle, he never completely abandoned acting.
In 2022, he released Lifemark, a film centered on adoption and the value of life. The project was particularly personal for Cameron, considering that four of his own children are adopted and his wife has her own experience as an adoptee.
Today, Kirk Cameron’s life looks very different from the one he had as a teenage heartthrob. Instead of chasing the spotlight, he has focused much of his time on his faith, his wife, his children, and now his grandchildren—while still occasionally returning to the screen for projects that are meaningful to him.
It is heartwarming to see how Cameron has built a life around the things he values most. Share this story with other fans of the former teen heartthrob so they can see what he has been up to over the years.
