Mike McKinsey says he experienced something beyond explanation after a medical emergency left him fighting for his life. The Tennessee construction superintendent claims he died for about 45 minutes and during that time, he saw Jesus, was taken to heaven, and witnessed answers to prayers he had whispered as a young boy more than four decades earlier.
McKinsey’s journey began during a stressful but joyful time in his life. He had been eagerly preparing to watch his son get married, but just before the wedding, he became seriously ill with a high fever and extreme fatigue. Believing it was only the flu, he tried to push through the celebration because he did not want to take attention away from his son’s special day.
“He was the first kid to get married,” McKinsey later recalled. “I don’t want to be a distraction.”
After the wedding, his family convinced him to seek medical help. Doctors initially suspected appendicitis, but further testing revealed a serious condition that required emergency surgery.
McKinsey says that before receiving anesthesia, something extraordinary happened.
He claims he looked beside him and saw Jesus standing there.
“Before they put a mask on or gave any medication, I looked to my right and there’s Jesus standing there,” he said.
According to McKinsey, Jesus appeared as a real person wearing a white robe. He described him as having darker skin than the traditional images he had seen growing up and said his eyes were a striking greenish-blue.
McKinsey says Jesus reached out his hand and told him: “I want to answer your prayer.”
Confused, he says he wondered what prayer Jesus was referring to, since the only thing he had recently prayed for was that his surgery would go well.
But when he took Jesus’ hand, McKinsey claims the hospital room disappeared, and he found himself somewhere completely different.
He describes standing barefoot on a beautiful green hill surrounded by a powerful white light. He says he could feel the grass beneath his feet and that every detail around him seemed more vivid than anything he had ever experienced.
As the light faded, he claims he saw a breathtaking city in the distance, filled with white buildings, tall towers, glowing domes, flowers, and mountains covered with perfectly shaped trees.
He says Jesus explained what he was seeing with the words:
“It’s the glory of the Lord.”
Overwhelmed by the moment, McKinsey says he fell to his knees.
Later, he woke up in intensive care after doctors had revived him following the medical crisis.
For years, one question stayed with him: What prayer was Jesus talking about?
Eventually, McKinsey says he remembered two childhood prayers he had completely forgotten.
The first came when he was five years old while attending his grandfather’s funeral. After hearing heaven described as a place without pain or sadness, he quietly prayed:
“God, that sounds like a really cool place. Could you show me heaven?”
The second prayer came after watching A Charlie Brown Christmas and hearing the Bible passage about “the glory of the Lord.” Curious about what that meant, he asked God if he could one day see it.
Decades later, McKinsey believes those childhood prayers were answered during his near-death experience.
“Forty years later… he answered both those prayers,” he said.
Today, McKinsey says the memory remains as clear as ever and that the experience completely changed his perspective on life.
“If I close my eyes, I can almost feel like I’m back there now,” he said.
His story has sparked conversations among people who believe in near-death experiences, while others continue to debate the meaning behind such extraordinary claims.
