Michael Packard thought he was heading into the ocean for another normal day of lobster diving. Instead, the 56-year-old commercial diver experienced something almost impossible to imagine — he ended up inside the mouth of a humpback whale.
Being in the ocean always comes with risks, but being swallowed by a whale sounds like something straight out of a movie. Yet, in 2021, Packard found himself living through that exact nightmare off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts.
The terrifying incident happened near Herring Cove Beach while Packard was diving from his lobster boat, the Ja’n J. Like any other morning, he entered the water expecting to spend hours searching the ocean floor for lobsters.
But within moments, everything changed.
Packard suddenly felt a powerful force hit him.
“Suddenly, I felt this huge shove, and the next thing I knew, everything was completely dark,” he later told the Cape Cod Times. “I could feel myself moving, and I could feel the muscles in the whale’s mouth squeezing.”
At first, Packard believed he had been attacked by a great white shark — a frightening thought considering the waters where he was diving.
But something didn’t add up.
There were no teeth.
There was no blood.
Then came the unbelievable realization:
He wasn’t being attacked by a shark.
He was inside a whale’s mouth.
“I was completely inside. It was pitch black,” Packard recalled. “I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m dead.’ All I could think about was my boys — they were 12 and 15 years old.”
Still wearing his scuba equipment, Packard began fighting and moving as much as he could. The terrifying struggle lasted around 30 to 40 seconds, although it likely felt much longer.
Then, something incredible happened.
The whale came back toward the surface.
Suddenly, Packard saw light.
“I saw light, and he started shaking his head from side to side, and the next thing I knew, I was outside in the water.”
The humpback whale had released him.
Back on the boat, his crewmates first thought Packard had been attacked by a shark. But they quickly realized they had witnessed something much stranger — a whale had surfaced and thrown him back into the ocean.
Packard was rescued, taken back to shore, and rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Despite the unbelievable event, he survived with only serious soft-tissue injuries and no broken bones.
His sister Cynthia later spoke about the terrifying moment, saying:
“Thank God it wasn’t a great white shark. He sees them all the time out there. He must have thought he was finished.”
Could a Whale Really Swallow a Person?
While the story sounds impossible, experts explained that it was an extremely rare accident.
Humpback whales do not hunt or eat humans. Their diet mainly consists of small fish and other ocean creatures. According to marine experts, Packard’s situation could only have happened because of a highly unusual chain of events involving a feeding whale.
Jooke Robbins, director of Humpback Whale Studies at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, described the encounter as something almost unheard of.
“Many things would have had to happen for someone to end up directly in the path of a feeding whale,” she explained.
Packard considered himself incredibly lucky.
After leaving the hospital, he thanked the rescue teams who helped save him and said he hoped to return to diving once he recovered.
“I am very bruised up but have no broken bones,” Packard wrote. “I want to thank the Provincetown rescue squad for their care and help.”
His unbelievable survival story quickly spread around the world, turning the lobster diver into an unexpected celebrity.
Soon after, Packard and his crewmate Josiah Mayo appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to share the shocking story with a wider audience.
During the appearance, Packard even sat inside a giant whale prop while explaining what happened.
Kimmel joked about the famous headline:
“And then last week, you were swallowed by a whale.”
Packard quickly corrected him with a smile:
“I wasn’t swallowed, Jimmy. I was in his mouth. Get that straight.”
Kimmel laughed and replied that “swallowed” made for better television.
Packard described those terrifying seconds inside the whale as feeling like he was trapped inside a moving vehicle or submarine, with water rushing all around him.
For Josiah Mayo, who witnessed the moment from the boat, the experience was equally frightening. At first, he thought Packard had been attacked by a shark. Then he saw the whale surface — and watched Packard suddenly emerge from the animal.
Kimmel also gave Packard some unusual gifts, including a Free Willy DVD, whale repellent, a special T-shirt, and even a whale-shaped cake featuring a tiny figure representing his incredible escape.
Packard joked that he wanted to apologize to the whale for getting in its way.
“I won’t ever do it again,” he said.
Interestingly, this was not the first time Packard had survived a life-threatening situation. More than two decades earlier, he also survived a plane crash in Costa Rica.
Despite those experiences, Packard said they did not completely change his outlook on life.
“I’ve heard people say that after near-death experiences they see life differently,” he explained. “I didn’t really get that. I’m still the same old guy doing my same old stuff.”
Although his story made headlines worldwide, Packard remained the same person he had always been — a lobster diver who simply happened to survive one of the most unbelievable encounters ever recorded.
His journey from the ocean floor to international fame became a reminder that sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction.
