When someone reaches an extraordinary age, people naturally want to know their secret. Many believe it comes from a special diet, a unique routine, or some hidden health trick. But for 116-year-old Ethel Caterham, the answer is much simpler.
She believes her peaceful approach to life helped her become the world’s oldest living person.
A remarkable life that began in 1909
Born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, England, Ethel Caterham has officially earned the title of the world’s oldest living person — a record recognized by Guinness World Records and LongeviQuest.
But her incredible age is only part of her story.
Throughout her lifetime, Ethel has witnessed some of the biggest moments in modern history, including the sinking of the Titanic, two World Wars, the first moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the rise of technology from the internet to smartphones and social media.
Ethel grew up in Tidworth, Wiltshire, as the second youngest of eight children. Longevity appears to have been part of her family history, with her sister Gladys living to the age of 104.
At just 18 years old, Ethel began an unforgettable chapter of her life when she traveled to British India to work as an au pair for a military family. She spent several years caring for children while experiencing a unique mix of British and Indian culture, traditions, food, and daily life.
After returning to the UK, she met Norman Caterham, a British Army officer, at a dinner party in 1931. The couple married in 1933 at Salisbury Cathedral and later built a life together through various military postings.
Their journey took them to places like Hong Kong and Gibraltar. While in Hong Kong, Ethel opened a nursery for both British and local children, where she taught English, games, and crafts.
Later, the couple settled back in Surrey and raised two daughters, Gem and Anne. Norman passed away in 1976.
A life full of incredible moments
Ethel has overcome challenges that many could never imagine. In 2020, at the age of 110, she caught COVID-19 — a serious illness for older adults — but made a full recovery.

When asked about the secret behind her long life, Ethel gave a surprisingly simple answer:
“Never arguing with anyone. I listen and I do what I like.”
Her advice reflects a calm and positive outlook that has guided her through more than a century of change.

A historic achievement
Ethel became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom in 2022. After the passing of Brazil’s Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas in April 2025, Ethel became the world’s oldest verified living person.
On her 115th birthday, King Charles III sent her a special message congratulating her on the incredible milestone. By her 116th birthday in August 2025, she had even shared a personal moment with the king.
Ethel also lived an active and independent life for many years. She continued driving until she was 97, played contract bridge well into her 100s, and maintained her independence for as long as possible.
After losing her younger daughter Anne in 2020, Ethel moved into a care facility in Surrey, where she continues to be celebrated for her strength, wisdom, and remarkable spirit.
Her care home described her journey as an inspiration, praising her resilience and positive attitude.
Ethel Caterham is not only a record holder — she is a symbol of strength, patience, and the beauty of living life one day at a time.
