A tense moment behind the scenes of the 2014 war film Fury reportedly pushed co-stars Scott Eastwood and Shia LaBeouf close to a physical confrontation, with Brad Pitt stepping in to calm things down.
Eastwood, the son of legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, recently opened up about the intense experience of filming the World War II drama during an appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. He recalled that the atmosphere on set was extremely intense, as director David Ayer put the cast through demanding military-style training to help them understand the bond and pressure of a real tank crew.
The film featured an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Logan Lerman, and Eastwood, all of whom trained together before filming began.
However, the intense preparation also created moments of tension between the actors.
Eastwood recalls his first impressions of LaBeouf
Eastwood said he was surprised by LaBeouf’s extreme commitment to his role, claiming the actor went to unusual lengths to stay in character, including pulling out a tooth and cutting himself before filming.
“He’s a very method actor,” Eastwood explained, saying he remembered thinking, “This guy’s crazy,” and deciding to keep his distance.
Despite trying to avoid any issues, the two actors eventually had a confrontation over a scene involving Eastwood’s character spitting chewing tobacco on the tank.
According to Eastwood, LaBeouf became upset because he believed the action was disrespectful to the vehicle they had grown attached to during filming. The disagreement quickly escalated, leading to a heated exchange between the two actors.
Eastwood said the situation became tense enough that people on set stepped in, including Brad Pitt, who helped separate them before things went further.
Eastwood describes LaBeouf as a complicated talent
Looking back on the incident, Eastwood suggested that the conflict was part of the larger challenges surrounding LaBeouf’s behavior at the time.
He acknowledged LaBeouf’s talent, describing his performance as powerful and captivating, while also saying he believed the actor was dealing with personal struggles.
“He’s clearly tormented,” Eastwood said, while also praising LaBeouf’s dedication and ability to deliver a memorable performance.
Brad Pitt shared his side of the story
Years earlier, Brad Pitt also talked about the same moment in an interview with GQ. Pitt explained that he and LaBeouf initially believed Eastwood was disrespecting the tank, which they had come to view almost like their home after weeks of intense training.
Pitt said both he and LaBeouf reacted strongly because they thought Eastwood was breaking the bond they had built with the vehicle and the characters they portrayed.
However, they later discovered that Eastwood’s actions were actually written in the script. He was simply following the direction given for his character.
Pitt joked that, in the end, he and LaBeouf were the ones who misunderstood the situation.
The behind-the-scenes clash has remained one of the more memorable stories from the making of Fury, showing just how intense the filming experience became for the cast.
