Deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at the Ely family home, where they discovered Valerie, 62, fatally stabbed after suffering multiple knife wounds. Investigators identified the suspect as the couple’s 30-year-old son, Cameron Ely.
The tragedy escalated moments later. Deputies located Cameron outside the residence and reported that he posed an immediate threat. According to authorities, after they were unable to gain verbal control of him, four deputies opened fire, fatally shooting him. In the span of a single night, Ron Ely lost both his wife of 35 years and his only son, leaving him to face an unimaginable personal tragedy.
The heartbreaking events were followed by a legal dispute. In October 2020, Ron Ely filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, challenging the official account of what happened. The lawsuit alleged that Cameron was unarmed and attempting to surrender when deputies fired more than 20 rounds. While Ely sought accountability through the courts, no legal outcome could erase the devastating loss of both his wife and son.
